Common Cause Failures (CCF) occur when multiple (usually identical) components fail due to shared causes. Typical examples of shared causes include impact, vibration, temperature, contaminants, miscalibration and improper maintenance. CCF is one of the reasons why a classical reliability model of a system may dangerously underestimate risk. It directly attacks the benefits of providing redundancy by creating a single point of failure.
